Installing Broadband

If you're looking to get Broadband, you'll need to be in an area of broadband coverage, have signed up with a company to give you broadband, and have a Broadband modem (help with all of this is listed above).

Once you have signed up for your account, there's normally around a five to ten day wait, while BT make the appropriate changes to your phone service at the BT exchange. After that, you'll be switched on to Broadband. You won't notice any difference in service, until you start getting your modem connected. Here's a summary of what happened when we got connected:

Day 1: Order placed for Broadband and a USB broadband modem. A basic check was done on our line

Day 5-10: Broadband enabled. Our modem and setup instructions delivered on the same day. Here's what we did to get connected:

  1. Start up the PC, and install the supplied software - it's the modem drivers for the Broadband modem
  2. Plug the microfilter into the phone socket (you also need microfilters for other handsets/equipment in your house, as above)
  3. Plug the modem's phone lead into the filter
  4. Plug the modem's USB lead into a spare USB port on the PC
  5. From the start menu, start up the supplied software, and enter the account details supplied by your broadband provider. You should just have a username and password - unlike a dialup account, there's no phone number.

Setup Charges

Some ISPs charge for set-up of your internet connection. The set-up fee is for configuring your computer to be connected to the internet. For broadband customers, a registered technician may be required to install additional equipment or you may be able to install it yourself. Check with your ISP to find out what installation options are available.

How much data will I download or upload?

Each time you read an email, view a web page, listen to a music file or watch a video on the internet you are downloading data. Each time you send an email or make a request for a web page, you are uploading data. This is important because the way you use the internet will determine which ISP account is best suited to your needs.

The following information is provided as a guide to assist users to calculate how much data they may upload or download:

bullet Activities such as receiving and sending text emails, receiving and sending relatively short word processing documents and reading largely text-based internet pages (browsing) would commonly use approximately 0.02 to 0.05 megabytes (MB) per activity
bulletReceiving or sending still pictures may use anywhere between 0.05 and 0.25 MB per picture
bullet Downloading a piece of music could be expected to use about four MB
bullet Downloading a five-minute music video or a movie trailer, with moving pictures and sound could be expected to use about 30 MB

If you intend to surf a lot or download lots of music and videos, it is worth shopping around for a deal that gives you high-speed and more time/usage allowance, before excess usage charges are applied.

If your primary intention is to send a relatively small quantity of emails to family and close friends, then it may be better to enquire about a standard broadband service (e.g. 512Kbps) or special limited usage offers

Hot Tip
Broadband services are 'always-on'. This means that broadband is a permanent connection to the Internet. A broadband connection lets you access the Internet from the minute you switch on your computer.

There's no need to dial up to the Internet or log off once you've finished surfing.

Any other costs?

Once you have Broadband installed you simply pay a flat fee each month with no additional charges for the amount of time you spend online. Costs you should enquire about, depending on the service you choose:
